Physical Education and Sport
At Globe we deliver a varied, range of physical activities to develop and extend children’s agility, balance and coordination. Children are taught: creative and folk dance, through a range of movement patterns, gymnastics, by developing body awareness and posture, athletics, through running, jumping and throwing, games, by applying simple rules to activities with opportunities to engage in competitive games and outdoor and adventure activities, through orienteering, linking to the geography curriculum. Two areas of the PE curriculum is taught each term in years one to six.
We are lucky to have three halls in school where PE can be taught. If the activity requires a space larger than our playground then we use the local parks in Bethnal Green for outdoor sporting activities.
Swimming at Globe
Our swimming lessons take place at York Hall swimming baths, taught by specialist swimming teachers. Children in years 4 and 5 have swimming lessons once a week half the academic year each. The vast majority of children are able to swim 25 metres or more by the time they leave Globe. We are very committed to swimming and spend a significant portion of our budget on it. Each Summer Globe takes part in a borough swimming gala for years 5 & 6. Usually some of our children end up competing in the finals and have won individual medals. We swim at York Hall and here is a list of appropriate swimwear that is acceptable in the pool.
Appropriate Swimwear
Appropriate swimming attire is a matter of both safety and comfort in the pool.
We kindly ask that all children attend lessons in swimwear that complies with the guidance in this document:
- Girls: We ask that girls do not wear two-piece outfits such as leggings and a top. These are not considered appropriate swimwear and can pose safety risks, as they tend to ride up over the head in the water. For those who require modest swimwear, please refer to the attached document for suitable alternatives that ensure both modesty and safety.
- Boys: Boys must wear one-piece swim bottoms only—no swim tops, please. Over time, tops become stretched and baggy, often riding up in the water, which has resulted in multiple rescue situations this year.
After School Sports Clubs
At Globe, we think it is really important that children develop their skills as part of smaller, sporting enrichment activities.
To promote a healthy lifestyle, we offer a wide range of after school sports club for children in years 1 to 6. The activities consist of football, tennis, cricket, hockey, rugby, multi-sports, dance, fencing, basketball, athletics and martial arts. Some of these activities are taught by specialist coaches and some by our own enthusiastic and passionate staff. Our aim is for children to gain a positive and engaging experience which hopefully will encourage them to take part in more sporting activities outside of school and in the future.
Sporting Competitions and Festivals
To develop further we encourage and offer children the opportunity to take part in sporting competitions and festivals. During sporting after school clubs, children compete against each other which helps to foster fair play and team spirit. Also, many are given the opportunity to represent Globe, competing against other schools in the borough. Last year Globe took part in cross-country, football, basketball, judo, athletics and swimming competitions as well as orienteering and value games festivals.
Sports Day
Our sports day usually takes place in July. The whole school take part in a fun and competitive day. The day is split into Early Years, Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4, Years 5 and 6 events. The events usually consist of, space hopper, three legged race, sack race, javelin throw, discus throw, long jump, sprint race, relay race, obstacle race and of course the traditional egg and spoon race! All children receive a medal for taking part and showing great team spirit. There are medals for children from each class who display all round good effort as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals in each event. Last year there was a football match between Dads and staff which was greatly enjoyed and hopefully will continue. Children, parents and staff really enjoy the day and look forward to it every year.
